Turn Around And Take A Step
by Handsome Matt
Two men, one experience and they change the world. What are you doing with your life?
Yvon Chouinard has it right ” you can’t keep trying to make a flawed system work.”
We’ve got thousands of gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico, the coastline in Alaska still has oil on it from the Exxon Valdez spill (which was finally settled in 2008. 2008?!). China, India, and Dubai are quickly outpacing the US in consumption of resources and production of pollution.
Closer to home: a few years ago, AEP was forced to pay the relocation costs for an ENTIRE town near one of their power plants.
What are we doing to ourselves? We’ve all bought into this consumptive rugged freedom narrative presented to us by companies.
And worse: The other sides’ solution is a return to a time before the industrial revolution! Have we lost all forms of common sense?
India, China and the developing world have the option to jump the curve and implement sustainable technologies now. Why rehash what has already been done?
The US has the market, know-how, and finances to update our entire system. Why aren’t we doing it?
Not to sound too Marxist, but it’s because a select set of companies are incredibly powerful and rich because of the current systems. Like the Robber Barons of the late 19th Century refusing to dismantle their trusts; nothing has changed.
We’re trying to put a band-aid on cancer.
